What is CBD Oil
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has become the go-to supplement for many people looking for alternative treatments over the past few years. It's very appealing to many people due to claims that it helps with conditions like anxiety, depression, and insomnia. What is cannabidiol (CBD) oil?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is amongst the over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD oil can be extracted from the hemp and cannabis plants, but the hemp plant contains more pure CBD oil than the cannabis plant. CBD from Hemp also contains less than 0.3% THC, which makes it highly beneficial for wellbeing. In 2018, CBD from hemp was no longer considered a controlled substance. However, some states still have restrictions on the sale and consumption of the compound. According to the FDA, CBD is classified as a dietary supplement. This means even though you can buy it, the safety and purity aren’t regulated.
CBD is closely related to many other cannabis compounds with the most important one being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC, also known as the psychoactive cannabinoid is responsible for providing the ‘high’ effect that cannabis is famous for. However, keep in mind that THC is illegal in most states due to its psychoactive nature. CBD and THC are the two components of cannabis that have been most studied by scientists. Both CBD and THC offer significant health benefits. But unlike THC, CBD does not give the ‘high’ effect. Studies also note that CBD may lessen or neutralize the psychoactive effects of THC, depending on the amount consumed. Since CBD is loaded with therapeutic benefits and is non-intoxicating, it makes it useful for patients seeking alternative treatments.
Benefits of CBD oil
- Neuroprotective effects
CBD may possess neuroprotective and anti-cancer properties. A 2010 brain cancer study by California scientists found that CBD “enhances the inhibitory effects of THC on human glioblastoma cell proliferation and survival.” This using CBD alongside THC makes THC even more potent as an anti-cancer substance. Another study in 2010 by German researchers reported that CBD stimulates neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells, in adult mammals.
- Chronic pain
CBD may also help with chronic pain. Apart from helping with chronic pain itself, CBD may also improve sleep and quality of life for chronic pain sufferers. Research on CBD and pain is currently in early stages and more long-term research is needed.
- Anxiety
Reports suggest that CBD may help reduce anxiety related to pain as well as social anxiety. A small study also showed that consuming CBD at certain doses may reduce performance-related anxiety. But these studies only involve small samples and so more information is needed.
